Chapter Eight

LAYLA

Sakkar turned slowly. His silvery gaze measured me in a way that gave me pause. I’d been so sure of a warm greeting when I’d rushed to the training field where I’d been told he was preparing to leave on a new mission. I was taken aback by this frosty perusal.

My smile was wobbly and unsure as I nervously fidgeted under his heavy scrutiny, adjusting the strap of my new Gia crossbody.

“Why are you here?” The silver in his eyes darkened and a deep furrow of confusion cut between his perfectly arched eyebrows.

My heart plummeted to my feet like a stone in water. What had become of his flirty glances and pretty endearments? Something was definitely off.

I could feel my mouth working like a fish gulping for air as my eyes searched his hard expression. Standing before me with a stern set of his regally handsome features, I got a glimpse of the male he had been before the Gretolics had done a number on his head.

He looked anything but tolerant. He was every bit the ruler with a wintery disposition, one who couldn’t be bothered with trivial matters beneath his notice.

I took a step back, not enjoying his cold glare. My reaction triggered something in him that made him drop his haughty attitude. His gaze warmed and softened with his exhausted exhale.

“My apologies, Layla. I hadn’t meant to sound so harsh.” Sakkar scrubbed his hands over his face. “I didn’t sleep and I’m cranky when I’m tired, but that’s no excuse. The fault is with me.”

Sakkar absently rubbed a circle between his heavy pecs where I knew a shawra would form when he bonded with his spirit mate. The very idea of him mated to another struck me with a pang of jealousy so hard, it liquified my knees.

Maybe Gia had been right and what I felt for Sakkar was my soul crying out for his. That this swirling knot banging behind my sternum was what he was feeling for me.

“You weren’t at the Christmas party last night,” I blurted.

“No. I relieved Sazzar in the control room instead.”

“Is that why you didn’t sleep?”

Sakkar’s face fell into weary lines as a shadow of sadness clouded his silvery gaze. I wondered what had happened that had turned him so gloomy.

In the little time I’d known him, he’d never been an overly exuberant male. The last time we’d been together, repairing the holes in the dome, he’d given me a glimpse of a playful side hidden beneath the tortured confidence he wore like armor.

But today, his shoulders were slumped, and his head hung low. The dark smudges streaking under his eyes aged him. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think he’d lost his best friend.

Worry for his safety prompted my next question. “Will you be okay to fly alone in the jungle when you’re so tired?”

“Valosians don’t need as much rest as humans.” Sakkar paused from where he’d turned to continue packing his open aired craft with provisions. “I’ll be fine.
